The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it have not approved any cream meant for bleaching of lips.
Their comment comes in the wake of news that the use of chemical concoction for lip-bleaching is on the rise among Basic and Senior High School pupils and students at Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) in the Central Region.
It has emerged that “conshore”, a term used for the mixture of toothpaste, bleaching cream and sometimes Ghanaian local alcohol popularly known as “akpeteshie”, is the formular used by the people who engage in this lip-bleaching exercise.
The pupils, both boys and girls, Adom News understands, usually apply the mixture to give their lips either pinkish or reddish looks.
The Head of Cosmetics at FDA, Emmanuel Nkrumah, has told Adom News that his outfit has heard about the situation and will investigate it.
He called on the youth to stop using the said chemical concoction because it is harmful to the body.
Mr. Emmanuel Nkrumah said they were working with the security agencies to arrest those who sell any such chemical concoctions even on social media because it was illegal to do so.
