National dialogue needed to address deplorable health sector – Prof. Akosa

A former Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Prof. Agyemang Badu Akosa has said a national dialogue is needed to address the deplorable state of Ghana’s health sector.

In his view, political leaders have no plans to transform the health sector since they seek medical services abroad.

“All successive governments we have had have not been using our health services and as a former Director General, I will say our health service is very bad” he said.

Prof. Akosa also expressed disappointment in the budgetary allocation to an important sector like the Health Ministry.

“Government contributes less than 100 dollars per citizen on health whilst America is spending 4000 dollars on an individual and this should tell you governments have no interest in our health service”. He stated.

Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the 1998 Class of the University of Ghana Medical School, Prof. Badu Akosah said the panacea to our challenges is national dialogue where all stakeholders would be involved to proffer the best solutions to address the numerous challenges confronting the sector.

“I always say we must have a national dialogue on our health services so that we can speak and be honest with our health service and that is the only way we can make it better” he indicated.

Prof. Akosa further attributed the admission of patients at prayer camps instead of hospitals to the loopholes in the sector and inaction of successive governments.

“Nowadays patients are taken to prayer camps instead of the hospital and when the situation becomes worse and they are about to die, then we rush them to the hospital. Which country in the world does that?” he quizzed.
