Gov’t should appoint GFA President – Kwabena Agyapong

-

Suspended General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwabena Agyapong is calling for a total overhaul of the Ghana Football Association.

According to Kwabena Agyapong, the problems in football are self-inflicted because people have unfettered power.

“Let”s go back to the basis when the President always nominated the FA Chairman because there was a good nexus between the government and football”, he stated.

Ghana football has been subjected to national ridicule following Anas’ latest investigative work into sports administration which filmed dozens of referees and match commissioners taking monies to fix matches.

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi told private investigators posing as investors that he could help them do business if they paid millions to the President and Vice-President.

He is seen collecting $65,000, promising the ‘investors’ he could ‘take over the whole country’.

Public trolling of officials captured in the video has followed since the Wednesday screening of the documentary.

Reacting to the exposé on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Kwabena Agyapong said the current governance system of the GFA was a recipe for corruption and cronyism.

According to him, under the current system, the GFA was hiding under the umbrella of FIFA to stay free from any form of accountability.

“FIFA cannot dictate to Ghana as a sovereign state. As a football body, FIFA is subject to the laws of Switzerland so the President can also intervene and we will not be banned”, he opined.

Mr. Agyapong who is also a football administrator stated that FIFA and GFA are not islands to ban a sovereign country controlling her football association.

“Is FIFA God? FIFA is under the rules of Switzerland, a small country. When the controversy at FIFA occurred, it was a prosecutor in Zurich who ordered investigations which led to the downfall of Sepp Blatter”, he noted.
Mr Agyapong, who was also the Spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor is convinced until we go back to the basis, Ghana football will continue to suffer.
