Accra Metro Director of Education, Mrs Margaret Frimpong Kore has said that candidates’ poor preparation towards examination accounts for poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
In an interview with Adomonline.com during a donation by National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) to the Ayalolo Cluster of Schools in Accra on Monday, she disclosed that some of the final year students skip classes after their final WASSCE registration.
She continued that, all efforts to prevent such unfortunate incidents have proved futile as some of the students find ways of making cash than focusing on their final papers.

“When they are registered they stop coming to school. You will try your best but they won’t come. They are going to work for money. When the time is up they will come. Some just want to write. We thought the Free SHS would motivate them to work hard…” she said. Madam Frimpong further urged parents to be keen on the well-being and education of their kids to attain a bright future.
Meanwhile, the National President of NASPA, Mr Allen Obeng disclosed that some of the final year students find it disgraceful to attend classes without any book or technical instruments.

He indicated that mathematical and technical courses that required special instruments always tend to put the class in a hazy state, which in the long haul affects their BECE scores.
To ease the plight of the candidates, NASPA donated set of tools such as drawing boards, pens, Mathematical sets and other tools necessary to solidify their foundation for the Free SHS scheme ahead of them.
“I embarked on an outreach to BECE candidates. They get devices or tools to ease their BECE pressure. You’ll be surprised to know that some don’t come to school because their teachers ask for math sets and drawing boards and because of fear and disgrace, they stay at home…” he said.
Nonetheless, the school prefects who were much elated thanked NASPA for igniting the path towards their academic excellence.
“This is the first time we are seeing this. We don’t have money to buy Math set and drawing. Half of them don’t Math set. Those who don’t have go out. It has been a means of help to us. Before most of us were not having math sets. Those of us mostly share the math sets…” they said.
