Oil-funded projects can’t be found in three regions – PIAC

Fifty percent of all oil-funded projects in three regions are nonexistent, the Public Interest and Accountability Committee, (PIAC) report has revealed.
The 2017 Project Inspections Report by PIAC revealed that of all oil-funded projects in the Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions, 50 percent are nonexistent.

“Six projects were inspected in the Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions; the findings and observations were overwhelming with fifty percent of the projects being nonexistent”, Chairman of PIAC, Dr Steve Manteaw, said.
He said PIAC is compiling a list of ‘Ghost projects’ and will soon call upon the Auditor General for further investigation.

Addressing a news conference in Accra, Dr Manteaw said the move will enable the Auditor General’s Department to open investigations into this development and ensure that all persons culpable are prosecuted.
In 2017, forty Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) funded projects were inspected in four regions – Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra and Volta regions with the aim of gathering and obtaining first-hand information on the quality and impact of projects funded with petroleum revenues at the sub-national levels.

Dr Manteaw said, “over fifty percent of school projects inspected showed signs of serious deterioration in less than three years after completion” including a six-unit classroom block Apedwa SDA primary school in the East Akim District of the Eastern region which has begun to sink due to poor siting and shoddy work.
