Change in eyesight is something not in our control. It keeps on deteriorating with age. In some people, the eyesight related problems start quite early in life, while in others it develops after the age of 50. But above all, there are plenty of small things we do every day that might be harmful to our eyesight and can have a negative effect on the vision.
Here are 8 small everyday habits you need to stop doing ASAP to keep your eyes as healthy as possible.
2. If you forget to wear sunglasses
When in a hurry, we often forget to put our sunglasses while stepping out in the harsh sunlight. But repeating this mistake every day can be harmful to your vision in the long run. Exposure to Ultra-violet rays can put you at the risk of developing major eye problems like cataracts. Always wear UV blocking sunglasses while you are outside. In case you are wearing contact lenses, then choose a brand with UV protection.
3. If you wear old contact lenses
Some people wear contact lenses for an entire day and even sleep with it at night. Wearing contact lenses continuously for two days in a row can increase the chances of developing an infection in your eyes. Even sharing your contact lens with others and not switching your contact case can be harmful to your vision.
4. If you rub your eyes very often
Rubbing your eyesight seems like a harmless act, but by doing this you are spreading dirt and bacteria in your eyes. This can turn your eyes pink and can even lead to permanent damage to the cornea. If you feel that something is inside your eyes, then splash some water in it rather than rubbing it.
5. If you use old and expired makeup
Make-up products come with an expiry date for a reason and by using them beyond it you are putting your sight at risk. Expired makeup can cause irritation in your eyes and lead to infection. As per experts, you should not keep any eye make-up for more than nine months.
6. If you smoke
Apart from damaging your lungs and teeth, smoking is also associated with a higher risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (damage to a small portion of the retina). Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss among people over 50 and smoking doubles the risk of developing this condition.
7. If you stare at your smartphone all day
Do your eyes feel tired after you stare at the blue-screen of your cellphone or laptop for too long? Well, there is a reason behind this. The light emitted from this screen actually turns your eyes dry and decreases tear production. This can lead to blurry and unclear vision.
8. If you do not visit your eye doctor
Most of the people only visit an eye doctor when they come across some major issue. Start taking care of your eyes at an early age. This will decrease the risk of developing eye-related complications. Even if you do not have any problem in reading or working, there’s still a chance that you may be squinting and straining your eyes without realizing it.
9. If you put drops without consulting your doctor
Redness of eyes is very common after a sleepless night or long working hours. People have a habit of putting eye drops without consulting their doctor not knowing that overusing it can cause damage in your eyes.
