70% of streetlights in Accra to be fixed within 50 days – Regional Minister

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has announced plans to install 70% of streetlights within 50 days in office.

The Shai Osudoku Member of Parliament (MP) disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Monday.

“Within my first 50 days in office, we will ensure that most of these issues are resolved. While it may not be entirely complete, we are committed to fixing at least 70% of them,” she said.

There have been complaints from motorists and residents about poor visibility on many roads at night due to the absence of streetlights.

Despite the Akufo-Addo-led government’s pledge to install 25,000 solar-powered streetlights throughout the region, the initiative did not come to fruition.

In response to growing safety concerns, the Minister assured the public that a more forceful approach would be adopted.

“We are going to enforce the law. The task forces of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) along with the security services will be used to address this issue. We are committed to sustaining this initiative,” she said.

Additionally, Madam Ocloo has pledged to address the issue of flooding, acknowledging the ongoing GARID [Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development] project, which has been active since 2019.

This initiative focuses on improving drainage systems, especially around the Odaw basin in Accra, to prevent flooding.

“We are working to fast-track this project, and it will resolve the flooding issues,” she assured.

The Minister further emphasised the need for better enforcement of building permit regulations while touching on construction in the region.
