Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul has brought closure to claims that four soldiers escaped a mob attack at Denkyira Boase before Major Maxwell Mahama was murdered.
Rather, Dominic Nitiwul explained that, the chief and people of Adoboye, a farming community in the Central region clashed with the soldiers over the movement of some excavators at a galamsey site.
The Defense Minister revealed this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday following an exposé by show host, Kwadwo Asare Baffuor Acheampong (KABA) on Monday.
According KABA, From January to March, the Captain stayed in Denkyira-Obuasi but came down to Accra to write an exam that would earn him a promotion to Major.
Whiles away, a lieutenant was sent there to stand in for the student Captain.
As part of the fight against illegal mining, the lieutenant led a raid on some mining pits and seized equipment which was later transported to Takoradi in the Western region.
According to KABA, the miners under the guise of making peace with the lieutenant invited him for a meeting.
He indicated that, the four soldiers whose name he withheld, butt said are Warrant Officers were beaten and only managed to escape using a truck as the miners watched them speed off in rage.
However, when the late Captain Mahama returned to relieved the lieutenant of his duties and resumed work, he was not told about the incident thereby walking in to the trap set by the miners who allegedly called him for a meeting
But in a rebuttal, Dominic Nitiwul who confirmed the mob attack on the soldiers said it did not happen at Denkyira Boase.
He noted that, the chief of Adoboye, a town closer to Denyira Boase led his people to attack the soldiers for ceasing the excavators belonging to a woman called Mary.
“The chief of Adoboye led his people to attack the soldiers for taking excavators on a galamsey concension belonging to a woman called Madam Mary. So the incident did not happen at Denkyira Boase” he stressed.
The Defense Minister maintained that nothing concerning the brutal killing of Major Mahama will be shrouded in secrecy.
But for now, Hon. Nitiwul appealed to the media to be circumspect in their reportage to ensure it does not compromise police and military investigations.
“The Board of Enquiry set up by the Military and the Police will come out with their report but for now, let us celebrate Major Mahama and give him a befitting burial” he appealed.
