2025 Budget: GH¢242.5m allocated for Akosombo Dam spillage victims

-

The government has allocated GH¢242.5 million to support communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage in 2023.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed this during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11.

“Mr. Speaker, we have allocated GH¢242.5 million to support victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage,” he announced.

On September 15, 2023, the Volta River Authority (VRA) opened the floodgates of the dam to protect its structural integrity following rising water levels, displacing thousands in surrounding areas.

Communities in the Lower Volta Basin, Savannah, Oti, Eastern, and Bono East regions were deeply affected.

The previous Akufo-Addo-led government allocated GH¢220 million in the 2024 budget for the relief and restoration phases.
