Ghana coach Otto Addo has shared insights on how to maximize Inaki Williams’ performance as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Since switching his allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022, the 30-year-old striker has struggled to replicate his club form for the Black Stars, scoring only one goal in 17 appearances, which include both World Cup and AFCON matches.
Addressing concerns about Williams’ inconsistent performances for the national team compared to his club career, Addo stressed that the key lies in better aligning the team’s style of play with the player’s strengths.
“One thing is the connection between him and his teammates. He’s shown what he can do in Spain, so it’s not just about him adjusting to the team, but also the team adapting to him,” Addo explained during a press conference on Wednesday.
“We know what his strengths are—running deep, threatening the defensive line, and getting behind defenders. We need to utilize these qualities more effectively. It’s a two-way street; he can make his game more versatile, but we also need to put him in the best position to succeed,” he added.
Williams returns to the Black Stars squad under Otto Addo after missing previous matches due to fitness issues.
The Black Stars will face Angola on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Baba Yara Stadium, with the match set to kick off at 16:00 GMT.
