Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson believes the Black Stars will need a miracle to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Ghana’s chances of securing a spot in next year’s AFCON in Morocco are uncertain after a poor start in the qualifiers.
Under head coach Otto Addo, the team has managed only two points from four games, with two draws and two losses, leaving them behind Sudan, who hold second place with seven points.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Johnson expressed that only a miraculous turn of events could help the Black Stars qualify for the tournament.
He suggested the team focus on preparing for the 2026 World Cup instead of setting their hopes on AFCON qualification.
“It’s unfortunate that we’re now hoping Sudan will lose their remaining games so we can qualify. But God doesn’t work like that—Sudanese players worship the same God,” he remarked.
“If we qualify for AFCON, it will be a miracle like never before. Let’s concentrate on the World Cup and get better organized. I’ll be surprised but happy if we make it to AFCON,” he added.
Ghana will conclude their qualifiers next month, facing already-qualified Angola in Luanda and bottom-placed Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.
For the Black Stars to qualify, they would need Sudan to lose their remaining games while securing wins against both Angola and Niger.
