2025 AFCONQ: Ghana could play remaining home games in Nigeria after Baba Yara stadium ban

-

Ghana is likely to play its remaining matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Nigeria, according to recent media reports.

The Baba Yara Stadium, Ghana’s only venue certified for CAF and FIFA matches, has been banned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

During their last inspection in Ghana, the CAF team raised concerns about the stadium’s condition, citing several issues including an uneven playing surface, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover, rendering it unfit for competitive matches.

In addition to the Baba Yara Stadium, other key venues in Ghana, such as the Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, also failed to meet the required standards.

As a result, CAF has directed Ghana to select an approved venue outside the country for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers in October.

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, has emerged as the most likely alternative due to its proximity to Ghana.

Other venues under consideration include the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny and the Stade de la Paix, both in Côte d’Ivoire, as well as the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco, where Ghana previously faced Niger.

Ghana is expected to make its decision soon and communicate it to CAF.

Meanwhile, Ghana is preparing to face Sudan in a doubleheader for Matchday three and four of the AFCON qualifiers.
