Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie says he is unconvinced about the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite aiming for a fifth continental title, Ghana’s senior national team has struggled, remaining winless after four qualifying matches.
The Black Stars began with a narrow 1-0 loss to Angola, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger in Berkane.
Seeking redemption, Otto Addo and his squad faced Sudan in a doubleheader but were held to a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium before falling 2-0 in the return match. These results leave Ghana third in Group F with only two points.
In an interview with Kumasi-based Pure FM, Afriyie acknowledged the possibility of unexpected outcomes in the final matches but maintained that Ghana’s hopes are essentially over.
He called it “a disaster” for the national team to potentially miss out on the expanded AFCON tournament in Morocco.
“It is football, and anything can happen, but for me, it is over for us,” he said.
“It is worrying because the tournament has now been expanded, and we still cannot qualify, and for me, it is a disaster,” he added.
The Black Stars will complete their qualification campaign with games against Angola and Niger.
They are set to travel to Luanda for a clash with Angola on November 15 at the Estádio 11 de Novembro, followed by a home fixture against Niger Republic at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18.
