The Black Satellites of Ghana kicked off their 2024 WAFU B Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Benin in their opening match in Lomé.
Jerry Afriyie was the standout player for Ghana, netting both goals for Desmond Ofei’s side. He opened the scoring in the 14th minute, skillfully dribbling past a defender and the goalkeeper to slot the ball into an empty net.
Benin quickly responded, equalizing in the 26th minute with a diving header that left Ghana’s goalkeeper with no chance. Just before halftime, the momentum shifted when Benin took a 2-1 lead with a long-range shot that found the back of the net.
Determined to turn the game around, the Black Satellites came out strong in the second half, creating numerous scoring opportunities but unable to find the equalizer as time wore on.
Their persistence finally paid off in stoppage time when Ghana was awarded a penalty for a foul in the Benin box. Confident from his earlier performance, Afriyie stepped up and converted the spot-kick, securing a crucial point for his team.
With both matches in Group A ending in 2-2 draws—hosts Togo and Niger also sharing the spoils—the group remains tightly contested. Ghana will aim for their first win when they take on Niger on Sunday, October 20.
