2024 polls: PNC was under duress but it’s a lesson – National Chairman on disqualification

-

The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Samson Asaki Awingobit has said the party was under pressure in preparing for the 2024 election.

This according to him partly accounted for the disqualification of their presidential candidate, Bernard Mornah by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Mr Awingobit disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday.

He cited the delay associated with the party’s congress to elect the flagbearer and other party executives.

Ahead of the December 7 election, the EC started receiving the nominations from Monday, September 9 to Friday, September 13, 2024.

However, the PNC held its congress on Saturday, September 7, 2024, which was just two days before the exercise.

“Aside the NPP and the NDC that had their congress early, the volume of the EC documents tell us that we should also conduct our congress early so we can have ample time to go through the forms and fill them. We didn’t have time for proper proofreading and vetting so it’s a lesson to us,” he said.

When asked if it will be fair for PNC members to say they are disappointed, Mr Awongobit that will be out of place.

“I don’t think the party supporters will say they are disappointed in me because I was not a stumbling block that held us from going to congress early. The former executives who followed the participation in the 2020 election should have made us go to the congress earlier,” he noted.

Mr Awingobit added that, if the congress had been held a month earlier, it would have made a difference for the party.
