2024 polls: Next NPP govt will ensure sustainable mining – NAPO

-

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has pledged that a government led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will put a stop to mining activities in waterbodies and forest reserves.

Dr. Prempeh assured that, the next NPP administration would introduce eco-friendly mining equipment to reduce environmental degradation and protect river bodies.

During a campaign stop in Odotobri, in the Ashanti Region, he stressed the party’s commitment to promoting community mining as part of a broader plan for sustainable mining practices.

“There will be a law prohibiting mining in river bodies and forest reserves. We will implement regulations to govern mining activities. A new policy will also be introduced to ensure that mining communities receive the necessary equipment to protect the environment,” he stated.

Napo pledge comes after various Associations and Unions have been advocating for a ban on all forms of mining until sustainable solutions are found.

Organized Labour and related groups have given the government until the end of September to address the illegal mining crisis, or else they will consider taking further measures.
