The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ketu North Constituency of the Volta Region has urged the police to strengthen internal security during Saturday’s polls to prevent violence and uphold public confidence in law enforcement.
Addressing the media, Ketu North NPP Chairman, Mark Thompson Gbeti, highlighted concerns over escalating tensions, citing recent violent incidents, including the destruction of campaign materials and attacks on party members.
He referenced an incident on November 21, 2024, during which the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Enoch Amegbletor, and his team were attacked by alleged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while engaging with the community in Tadzewu.
“The attackers pursued the team, leading to a confrontation during which Mr. Philipson Eli Dzokoto, a Regional Communications Team member and Dean of Coordinators, was severely assaulted. He is currently receiving treatment at IHDN Missionary Hospital at Dzadokpo. We extend our sympathies to him and others affected by this cowardly attack,” he said.
Mr. Gbeti expressed disappointment over the police’s failure to arrest the perpetrators, describing the delay as a threat to public trust in the democratic process.
He called on the police to expedite investigations and bring the culprits to justice.
“Failure to act within this period will compel us to escalate the matter to higher authorities and explore all lawful avenues to protect the safety and rights of our members and the constituency at large,” he warned.
Mr. Gbeti also urged the police to maintain their professional ethos, ensuring the safety of constituents and the peaceful conduct of the elections in the constituency, recognized as a hotspot in the Volta Region.
The Ketu North Constituency is expected to witness intense competition in the parliamentary elections between the NPP’s Enoch Amegbletor and the NDC’s Edem Agbana.
