The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections in the Bawku Central constituency and surrounding areas, despite persistent security challenges.
This assurance addresses concerns raised by some Ghanaians, who feared that the ongoing conflict might hinder residents from participating in the December 7, 2024, elections.
Speaking in an interview, the Upper East Regional Director of the EC, William Obeng Adarkwa, emphasized the Commission’s collaboration with security agencies to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
“We are prepared as a Commission. The situation in Bawku is primarily a security matter, and the Ghana Police Service is responsible for maintaining order. We are in daily communication with them, and they keep us updated. Meanwhile, we continue to train our officials and equip them with the necessary skills to conduct the elections,” he told Citi News.
Mr. Adarkwa also appealed to residents to create a peaceful atmosphere to facilitate the movement of election officials and materials to designated locations.
The unrest has disrupted essential services in Bawku, forcing teachers and students to vacate schools and halting operations by the Ghana Water Company Limited and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). Residents now face limited access to water and electricity.
To maintain order, authorities have imposed a curfew from 6 am to 6 pm, enforced by security personnel, as the community braces for potential further violence.
