2024 polls: EC can’t make anybody president – Jean Mensa

-

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reiterated that the electoral body does not have the power to determine who becomes Ghana’s next president.

According to her, it is only the votes of the people that can make or decide who the president will be.

Madam Mensa has therefore cautioned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation ahead of the December 7 election.

She noted that false narratives could undermine public trust in the Commission, as well as the credibility of the election and the peace of the nation.

“The EC can never make anybody President, and I think that we all know this around this table. Therefore, we should not peddle misinformation, fake news and disinformation and give innocent citizens who do not know the process that the electoral commission can make somebody a president,” she said.

Speaking after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, the EC boss  emphasised the need for the public to rely on accurate and truthful information.

“I would like to state on this occasion and quote from Dr Hassan Ayariga that the EC can never make anybody a president. What the EC does is declare who the voters choose as their president. So, it is the Ghanaian voter who votes a president into being, it is not the EC that makes a president. We only declare the voters’ choice,” she stated.
