2024 polls: Calm restored at Asante Mampong Constituency after voting disruption

-

Calm has successfully been restored at the IJ Infant Junior Primary polling station in the Asante Mampong Constituency.

The polling station was briefly disrupted due to a misunderstanding between National Democratic Congress (NDC) agents and Electoral Commission (EC) officials regarding a broken ballot box seal.

NDC agents Maud Safowaa Iddrisu and Charles Kumedzro confronted EC officials, alleging that the seal was broken in their absence. Mr Kumedzro insisted that voting would not proceed unless the ballot box was replaced.

Presiding Officer Gideon Wireko admitted to breaking the seal while setting up but explained that the busy environment made it difficult to identify agents.

He added that agents did not approach him at the time.

Calm was restored after 30 minutes of tension when Municipal EC Director Kwabena Karikari intervened to mediate the issue. Voting subsequently resumed.
