The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Hohoe Constituency of the Volta Region has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is deliberately creating non-existent issues in the constituency ahead of the elections in December because it is sensing defeat.
According to the NPP Secretary, Godwin Temadonku the opposition party has chosen to engage in misinformation and warmongering to prepare the minds of its followers to foment chaos, when it eventually loses the election.
He was addressing the press in Hohoe, to respond to allegations by the NDC of a bloated voter register among others.
“The posturing of the Hohoe NDC before the 2024 general elections is just violence and chaos. They know the defeat that awaits them and for that matter, are trying very hard to mar the beauty of elections in Hohoe Constituency,” he said.
He expressed optimism the NPP would maintain the Hohoe parliamentary seat based on the track record of the sitting Member of Parliament, John Peter Amewu, and the Akufo-Addo-led-government.
“They are slowly conditioning their supporters to cry foul when the inevitable occurs. The current NDC leadership in Hohoe lacks the courage to acknowledge their failure and disappointment to the people.
“They do not have the strength to admit they cannot win against the formidable John Peter Amewu, who has consistently shown that political office is about service, humility, respect for the voter, and, most importantly, delivering significant development.
“We are confident of a decisive victory, as we tirelessly work day and night to share our message with the electorates. Our Honorable MP is making great strides in improving the lives of the people. Those who value development have shown their strong support, and this is what terrifies the NDC”, he said.
He pointed out that the NDC’s allegation that names on the Wli Todzi voter’s register do not tally with the community’s census data exhibits the party’s lack of understanding of electoral laws.
He explained there was an agreement at a Municipal Inter-Party Advisory Committee (MIPAC) meeting that two mobile centres be created at Alavanyo and Wli Todzi for electorates who reside in hard-to-reach areas to register and cast their ballots.
He could not fathom why the NDC did not cry foul about the figures of the centre at Alavanyo but raised concerns about that of Wli Todzi, where the mother of the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant, John Peter Amewu hails from.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it is important to note that the voter population of Wli Todzi for 2020, 2023, and 2024 are as follows: 2020 was 2,238, 2023 was 2,282, and 2024 was 2,569. By this, 44 new registrations were recorded in 2023 and 287 new registrations were recorded in 2024. This data is available to all the parties.
“The persistent orchestrated attacks on the people of Wli Todzi and the Agumatsa area are a result of the fact that Hon. John-Peter Amewu’s mother hails from Todzi and the support that the NPP and Hon. John-Peter Amewu enjoys from the area. Regrettably, the Hohoe NDC will not do the same in Alavanyo where Efo Worlanyo Tsekpo hails from,” he stressed.
He also objected to the suggestion that the Wli Todzi register was infiltrated with names of foreigners, explaining that a move by the NDC to foil attempts by supposed Togolese to get their names on Ghana’s electoral rolls resulted in nothing.
He said that the Ghana Immigration Service engaged by the NDC reported not a single case of illegal immigrants crossing into Ghana to register as alleged by the NDC.
He counter-accused the NDC of bussing people from Kpando, Accra, Leklebi, and others to register in the Hohoe Constituency and were jubilant at the end of the 2024 limited voter registration.
Mr Temadonku said he finds it strange for the same NDC to turn around and raise “false alarms” about the register being bolted after successfully getting their people from outside the constituency onto the electoral roll.
“Yet, despite these actions, the NDC now seeks to raise false alarms about a bloated voter register. Their hypocrisy is staggering. If any party should be investigated for attempting to manipulate the electoral process, it is the Hohoe NDC.
“They blatantly engaged in busing people to manipulate the register. This is not only unpatriotic, but it is also a betrayal of democratic values. We call on the police to investigate their actions, as the evidence is clear”, he said.
Mr Temadonku urged the electorates to ignore the NDC which had represented them in parliament for about 28 years with very little to show and vote for John Peter Amewu to continue his development agenda for the Hohoe Constituency.
