Asante Kotoko will play their home games at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese following the closure of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for renovation.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) announced that the stadium will be closed for one month to undergo maintenance.
The condition of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium became a hot topic after Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, suffered a 1-0 loss to Angola during their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. This marked the end of Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten streak at the stadium.
Many have attributed the loss to the poor condition of the pitch, but NSA Deputy Director General Majeed Bawa dismissed these claims.
Speaking on Asempa FM‘s Sports Nite, Bawa questioned the criticism, saying, “Are they suggesting that the Angolans were playing in the sky? Both teams played on the same pitch, and it was approved by CAF for the game.”
Despite the defense of the pitch’s condition, the NSA has decided to proceed with the repairs, which will include fixing facilities damaged by angry fans after the match. The renovation is expected to be completed by October.
As a result of the closure, Kotoko will be forced to play their upcoming home matches at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.
They had originally been scheduled to host Nsoatreman FC and Young Apostles on matchdays 2 and 3 of the Ghana Premier League.
The 2024/25 season kicks off on Saturday, September 7, with Kotoko set to face Karela United at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex.
