2023 AFCON: Sports Minister explains how $3m was spent in two weeks

-

Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has provided a breakdown of how funds were utilized during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports, Culture, and Tourism on Tuesday, September 24, Ussif outlined how $3 million was spent on the Black Stars’ participation in the tournament.

He explained that the funds covered expenses such as chartered flights, logistics, and per diems before, during, and after the competition.

“Our team, once they are here and they are going to Cote D’Ivoire, you have to charter a flight and that flight comes at a cost,” he said.

“Apart from you flying all of them in business class, you also have to charter a flight…and when they finish, you get a flight to bring them back so those are the cost,” he added.

Despite the financial commitment, the Black Stars struggled, failing to secure a win in any of their three group-stage matches and exiting the tournament early.
