2019 AFCON: Ghana’s final 23-man squad announced

-

Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah has announced the final squad that will be taking part in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

After announcing a 29-man preliminary squad in May, Kwesi Appiah has trimmed it down to 23 players.

The major surprise was Majeed Waris, whose place has been taken by for U-23 striker Kwabena Owusu, who made his first appearance for the senior national team on Sunday against Namibia.

The other omissions are Ebenezer Ofori, Yaw Yeboah, home-based duo Abdul Fatawu and Mohammed Alhassan as well as Musah Nuhu.

For Nuhu, he pulled out of the squad after sustaining a knee injury during training.

Other than that, the majority of the players that featured at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon are named in Kwesi Appiah’s squad.

That includes captain Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew, Mubarak Wakaso, Christian Atsu, Baba Rahman, Thomas Partey, John Boye and Afriyie Acquah.

The four-time champions will play in Group F alongside Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau and Benin.

Ghana’s opening match will be against Benin on 25 June at the Ismailia Stadium.
