2016 voters’ register had animals and trees as people’s photos – EC

The Electoral Commission(EC) is insisting that the 2024 voters’ register is credible and fit to ensure a smooth and transparent process on December 7.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, the Director of Electoral Services, Benjamin Bano-Bio stated that, the 2016 register had plants and animals as people’s images.

However, through the exhibition exercise, all these issues were detected and resolved.

Mr Bano-Bio’s comments come amidst demands by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the register, which they have argued is unfit with several anomalies and irregularities detected.

“A credible register is what we all look forward to. We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the register is fit. We have never conducted any forensic audit but in time past, I will say that the 2016 register contained photos of plants and animals representing voters.

“There were calls for a forensic audit but that did not happen. Those errors were created through printing and the exhibition corrected all of that. Sine 1992, several issues have been corrected through exhibition,” he stated.

Mr Bano-Bio added that, the Commission has addressed all the issues raised by the NDC with a thorough work done on the register.

He asserted that, the EC has done its part but if the NDC suspects there are outstanding issues, they should present an evidence to guide them.

“We are open and committed to ensure that everyone has access to the register to verify their details and it is an attempt to ensure an all inclusive register and prove the Commission has nothing to hide,” Mr. Bano-Bio noted.
