One person was found dead in an abandoned house close to the Gbewa Palace in Yendi in the Northern Region on Friday, January 18, 2019.
This followed an exchange of gunshots between security officers at the post at the Gbewa Palace and some unknown gunmen.
The body of the yet to be identified person was sent to the Yendi Government Hospital morgue for preservation by the security officers.

A police report by the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, indicates the incidence happened in the presence of security officers within the hours of the curfew when the rituals were about to commence at the Gbewaa Palace in line with the customs and traditions of Dagbon to enskine the newly selected Yaa-Naa, Naa Abubakar Mahama.
“Security personnel on ground returned fire towards the said direction and pursued the shooters inside the building after police and military had surrounded it”, he explained.
“One unidentified man believe to be in his 35-year was also found dead in the compound of the said house that is where the firing was coming from”, the report added.

Two men were, however, arrested with an AK 47 assault rifle after the security surrounded the said house. The arrested men have since refused to disclose their identity to the police.
DSP Tanko said the security issues did not interfere with the performance of the installation rites, thus the rites took its full shape at about 00:45hr of January 19,2019, amidst drumming and firing of musketry with tight security.

“The activities came to a close at about 05:30hrs. No additional unusual incident recorded. Meanwhile, the situations at the Gbewaa Palace and the entire Yendi Municipality are being monitored”, he explained.
Unknown gunmen also fired from three additional directions around the same time.
They were also pursued by the police-military team but managed to escape.
