TUC renews call for equal pay, gender equity https://www.adomonline.com/tuc-renews-call-for-equal-pay-gender-equity/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 23:06:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450806 The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana has renewed its call for decisive action to address gender pay inequities as the world observes International Equal Pay Day today.

The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the ongoing struggle for equal pay for work of equal value, with a particular focus on closing the gender pay gap that disproportionately affects women worldwide.

In a statement released to mark the occasion, the TUC highlighted the deep-rooted societal structures that continue to fuel wage disparities and limit employment opportunities for women in Ghana.

According to the union, these challenges include occupational segregation and a lack of investment in women’s education, which have kept many women from leadership roles and consigned them to low-paying jobs.

The TUC also pointed to the “motherhood penalty,” noting that women with childbearing responsibilities often face additional barriers to career advancement and are subjected to greater scrutiny in the workplace.

As part of its demands, the TUC is urging the government to ratify International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions 190 and 183, which address violence and harassment in the workplace and provide maternity protection, respectively.

The union also called for the swift implementation of the recently passed Affirmative Action Act, which seeks to ensure equal access to opportunities and representation for women in all sectors.

Furthermore, the TUC has called for national legislation promoting pay transparency and penalizing discriminatory practices to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work.

In its statement, the TUC celebrated the contributions of working women across Ghana, reaffirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace and promoting gender equity.

The union emphasized that Ghanaian society will thrive when all its members have equal opportunities, and it remains committed to advocating for policies that will help eliminate the gender pay gap.

As International Equal Pay Day is observed, the TUC urged all stakeholders to work towards a future where gender-based wage disparities are eradicated, ensuring that every woman in Ghana can achieve her full potential.

Drama at Bole court as thief escapes in handcuffs https://www.adomonline.com/drama-at-bole-court-as-thief-escapes-in-handcuffs/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 23:03:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450819
A 22-year-old carpenter, Seidu Abdul-Aziz, who was sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing a sheep, escaped from the courtroom in Sawla, Savannah Region, with police handcuffs still on his wrists after receiving his sentence.

The prosecutor, ASP Wisdom Pavis, told the court that the accused had been spotted selling a stolen sheep at the Sawla market.

The sheep had been taken from the complainant’s house two days prior, and after a chase, Abdul-Aziz was apprehended.

He was arrested by police and admitted to the crime, explaining that he resorted to theft because he is an orphan.

Charged with stealing a sheep valued at GH¢1,000.00 and unlawful entry, Abdul-Aziz pleaded guilty.

In court, he asked for leniency, requesting forgiveness from the presiding judge, His Worship Edward Essel.

The court fined Abdul-Aziz GH¢1,000.00 and sentenced him to six months in prison as a first-time offender.

However, shortly after the sentencing, Abdul-Aziz managed to flee the courtroom with police handcuffs still on.

His escape was short-lived, as the Sawla police, along with some local youth, quickly arrested him a few meters away from the Bole District Magistrate Court.

UCL: Gittens scores twice as Dortmund beat Club Brugge https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-gittens-scores-twice-as-dortmund-beat-club-brugge/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 22:25:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450826 Jamie Gittens scored twice as Borussia Dortmund beat Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Last season’s beaten finalists went ahead in the 76th minute when England Under-21 forward Gittens shot from the edge of the box and the ball deflected off two defenders before looping into the far corner.

Gittens doubled Dortmund’s lead when he produced two stepovers in the box before firing into the bottom corner.

Serhou Guirassy was fouled by Brandon Mechele in added time and converted the resulting spot-kick with a chip down the middle.

The game was played at a frenetic pace with Hugo Vetlesen going close for the Belgian home side as he rattled the crossbar from close range.

Despite the seemingly comfortable scoreline for Dortmund, Brugge had several chances to score.

Raphael Onyedika and Vetlesen had low strikes palmed away by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel while Hans Vanaken blazed over from the edge of the box.

Christos Tzolis put a header wide at the far post as Brugge were left to rue missed opportunities with Dortmund scoring three times in the final 14 minutes.

UCL: Keeper howler gifts PSG win over debutants Girona https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-keeper-howler-gifts-psg-win-over-debutants-girona/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 22:21:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450823 Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s late howler gifted Paris St-Germain victory against Champions League debutants Girona.

Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes drilled a low effort at Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from a tight angle, but the keeper made a major error and let the ball sneak through his hands.

The hosts looked as if they would be held to a draw by the Spanish side’s steely and determined defensive performance before Gazzaniga’s error.

Girona, who are making their debut in Europe’s top competition after finishing third in La Liga last season, were composed as they sat back and mostly nullified PSG – who registered 26 shots without one of their players scoring.

France forward Ousmane Dembele had good chances to break the deadlock for the hosts but saw a curling effort hit the crossbar and also had the ball snatched from his feet by an excellent Ladislav Krejci tackle when he charged towards the visitors’ goal.

Spurred on by their vocal travelling supporters, Girona sat back but passed effectively to make life difficult for PSG.

But Girona offered little threat and were reduced to finding a way to see off PSG’s waves of attacks.

Luis Enrique’s side laboured for an opener and found it difficult to create much which caused any significant issue Gazzaniga until he failed to make a simple save at the death.

Girona are next in league phase action when they host Feyenoord on Wednesday, 2 October, while PSG travel to Arsenal on Tuesday, 1 October.

UCL: Frustrated Manchester City held by Inter Milan in opener https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-frustrated-manchester-city-held-by-inter-milan-in-opener/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 22:18:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450820 Manchester City’s Champions League campaign opened in frustrating fashion as they were held to a draw by impressive Inter Milan at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side were never at their most fluent, not helped by an injury to Kevin de Bruyne that forced him off at half-time, but their Italian opponents were well worth their draw.

In a repeat of the 2023 Champions League final won by City in Istanbul, Inter showed superb organisation and attacking threat despite facing increased pressure in the second half.

Erling Haaland, seeking his 100th goal for the hosts, was largely kept quiet, and both sides had chances to make the breakthrough but were unable to capitalise.

Phil Foden, on as a second-half substitute for the injured De Bruyne, saw a shot saved by Inter keeper Yann Sommer, who also thwarted Josko Gvardiol.

Inter wasted many good situations, with former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian choosing a flamboyant backheel when the shot was on, while another one-time Old Trafford star, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, fired over the top from close range, leaving coach Simone Inzaghi on his knees beating the turf in frustration.

But City went close to a dramatic late winner as Foden fired straight at Sommer after a delightful move and Ilkay Gundogan had two headed chances in the box.

Victor Olatunji doubled Sparta’s advantage shortly before half-time with a fine volleyed effort.

Qazim Laci rounded off the win in the 58th minute with a simple strike after wrong-footing two defenders and the Salzburg goalkeeper with a dummied shot.

Sparta’s win was their first in the Champions League proper since beating Lazio 1-0 in December 2003.

News of KODA’s death was a difficult moment for me – Joe Mettle https://www.adomonline.com/news-of-kodas-death-was-a-difficult-moment-for-me-joe-mettle/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 22:11:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450809 Gospel singer Joe Mettle has expressed profound grief over the death of his colleague, Kofi Owusu Dua Anto, affectionately called KODA.

According to Mr. Mettle, it has been a difficult experience, given the friendship they both shared until KODA’s demise.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Changes show, the singer told Roselyn Felli, who asked about how he felt upon receiving the news of his colleague’s death, that “it was a difficult moment and still is.”

He continued that, although the musician is gone forever, reminiscing about moments makes him feel as if KODA is still alive.

“Sometimes we’re still living in denial about the fact that maybe he’s still around. Once in a while you have the awareness that he really is gone,” he reiterated.

Mr. Mettle has faith that the departure of the ‘Hossana’ hitmaker is the will of God, believing that KODA is resting peacefully in God’s bosom.

Meanwhile, the final funeral rites for the late singer are scheduled for Friday, September 20, at KICC Dominion Center, off Spintex Road.

All fans and sympathizers are encouraged to join the family as they bid their beloved one farewell.

But Heorhiy Sudakov’s low spot-kick to the left was brilliantly saved by Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski.

Bologna, who finished fifth in Serie A last season, grew into the game with Santiago Castro having an effort saved by visiting keeper Dmytro Riznyk, who also twice denied Giovanni Fabbian early in the second half.

But neither side were able to find a breakthrough, meaning Bologna’s unbeaten European home run extended to 28 matches.

We’ll defy injunction orders and protest – Barker-Vormawor https://www.adomonline.com/well-defy-injunction-orders-and-protest-barker-vormawor/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 21:49:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450805 Convener of #FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says they would defy the court order injuncting them to demonstrate.

He argued that the injunction, secured ex-parte by the police, is unconstitutional, especially regarding the right to freedom of assembly.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on September 18, Mr Barker-Vormawor pointed out that they notified the police of their protest three months ago.

He questioned the basis of the court’s decision, adding that they would proceed even if they were arrested.

“Our courts are clear that on questions on freedom of assembly, you cannot obtain an ex-parte injunction against us. We notified the police three months ago. It is laughable for them to go to their favourite friends in the judiciary who have completely disregarded our constitution and give them an injunction.

“Now, take it from me – we will disregard any unlawful order to stop us from going on a protest. We are going to defy any unconstitutional order that has been purportedly made by any court,” he stated.

This comment comes on the heels of the Ghana Police Service securing an injunction from the High Court of Justice against Democracy Hub’s planned three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.

The protest is intended to address key national issues such as socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence.

Mr Barker-Vormawor described the injunction as “laughable to the point of ridiculous.”

“It appears that everybody in this country is entitled to go on demonstrations apart from #FixTheCountry. We have received continuous and perpetual injunctions from last year.

“In December when we wanted to go on a demonstration, an injunction was issued that Christmas is for merry-making and that we are not entitled to go on a demonstration, and this has happened again,” he added while recounting.

He added that “when the police continue to act lawlessly with the aid of the court who have no respect for our constitution, it is incumbent upon every citizen to defend the constitution and our right.”

Bawumia promises mini harbour, sea defense for Sege https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-promises-mini-harbour-sea-defense-for-sege/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 21:38:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450800 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to build a mini harbour and a sea defense for the people of Sege if elected in the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the initiative aims to boost the local economy, improve livelihoods, and protect coastal communities like Sege from the damaging effects of sea erosion.

During a campaign visit, Dr. Bawumia expressed hope that the sea defense would safeguard the coastline and residents from the ongoing threat of tidal waves and erosion, while the mini harbour would offer opportunities for fishermen and traders, enhancing trade and transportation in the area.

“…we need a mini harbor. So, we are going to work on bringing a mini harbor to Sege for you. That is a very, very important thing. Of course, the roads also need to be addressed, as there are issues with roads in this area, and we are going to tackle some of the problems you have already raised. And, of course, it is very important that we also work on the sea defence for this area.”

Dr Bawumia noted that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer who would serve only one term, he has the potential for two terms, which means he would be held accountable over a longer period.

He noted that with this in mind, he promised to work diligently for the people.

“If I come back in four years, I’ll have to give an account. What have I done with the sea defence? What have I done with the premixed fuel? What have I done with the roads? I will give an account. The former president will not have to come back to give an account, but I will. I’m going to work very hard to deliver for you, because I have to give an account. I’ll work very hard to make sure I deliver.”

NDC becoming a threat to national security – Former MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-becoming-a-threat-to-national-security-former-mp-audio/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 21:24:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450792 Former Manhyia North Member of Parliament (MP) Collins Amankwah has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is gradually posing a threat to national security.

This, he explained is due to the chaos that characterised the Kumasi edition of the NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration against the Electoral Commission(EC) on Tuesday.

Speaking on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Mr Amankwa cited the vandalism at the EC office stated it was uncalled for.

“What happened in Kumasi must be condemned. The NDC must advise the youth and call them to order. If the violence exhibited was a rehearsal towards 2024, then they should be careful. It is an act of indiscipline. I thought we have disbanded vigilantism but we must be careful because he NDC is gradually becoming a threat to national security as a group,” he condemned.

Approximately 5,000 NDC supporters gathered at the party’s Ashanti regional headquarters in Amakuom around 10:30 am before marching to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC).

The protest began peacefully, but tempers flared when the demonstrators led by the NDC Regional Chairman, Nana Akwasi Agyeman deviated from the planned route to submit their petition at the ARCC.

The situation resulted in a clash with the Police, leading to the injury of one officer who is currently undergoing treatment.

The Police were compelled to use tear gas to control the irate crowd as the pelted stones.

Cholera continues to claim 115 lives per hour across Africa – Report https://www.adomonline.com/cholera-continues-to-claim-115-lives-per-hour-across-africa-report/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 20:14:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450778 Cholera, commonly known as a “disease of poverty,” continues to claim 115 lives deaths per hour among marginalized communities in Africa that lack access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare.

Unsafe sanitation practices and behaviours are resulting in greater water pollution, disease outbreaks, and rising mortality rates across Africa, the 2024 State of Africa’s Environment report on water said.

The report released by the Indian-Based Centre for Science and Environment highlights that death rates from unsafe water sources in Africa are alarmingly high, reaching 50 deaths per 100,000 people—1,000 times higher than in developed countries.

Nigeria experienced one of the largest cholera outbreaks, affecting 32 of its 36 states, with around 90,000 people falling ill and over 3,000 deaths reported by the end of 2021.

In 2023, Zimbabwe faced one of its most severe cholera outbreaks in recent years, spreading to all 10 provinces. By May 2024, the country had recorded more than 30,000 cholera cases and 600 deaths in the first four months of the year.

In Ethiopia, limited access to safe water and sanitation has contributed to cholera becoming endemic. Since the outbreak began in August 2022, the country reported 44,044 cases and 571 deaths by May 2024. Additionally, between 2019 and 2021, Ethiopia documented a total of 15,515 suspected cholera cases.

“Three-fourths of the cases were reported from the drought-affected regions of Oromia, Somali and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region.”

According to the Ethiopia Public Health Institute, as mentioned in the report, over 15.9 million Ethiopians, about 15 percent of the total population, reside in areas with a history of recurring cholera outbreaks. National cholera surveillance data from the past nine years (2015-2023) indicate that the country has experienced cholera outbreaks annually.

In Malawi, the cholera outbreak began in early 2022 and persisted into 2023-2024, with over 36,000 cases and 600 deaths recorded by early May 2024.

The report notes that Malawi has not been cholera-free since 1973. According to a CSE report, in the last 11 months of 2022, more than 950 Malawians died, and approximately 29,000 cholera cases were reported during that time.

“For Africa, it has been a scourge for the last 53 years. For the second driest continent of the world with high level of inequality in access to safe water and sanitation, the disease burden is too high. Various studies estimate that at least 40 million people live in cholera-endemic areas in Africa with a risk of frequent outbreaks,” the report said.

The report indicated that in January 2023, the WHO categorized the global increase in cholera as a Grade 3 Emergency, the highest classification for a health crisis necessitating a thorough response. One year later, over 30 countries reported cholera cases, with the African region ranking second after the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

“From January 1 to May 16, 2024, some 194,897 cholera cases and 1,932 deaths were reported worldwide. The region with the highest reported case count was the Eastern Mediterranean Region, followed by the African Region, the Region of the Americas, the Southeast Asia Region, and the European Region.”

According to the WHO Africa Region’s Monthly Regional Cholera Bulletin dated June 30, 2024, cholera outbreaks were reported in 14 countries across the continent. It was classified as a “crisis” in Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia.

“Since the beginning of the year 2024, the number of cholera cases and deaths reported to the WHO Regional Office for Africa (afro) as of 30 June was 104, 038 and 1, 732 respectively, with a case fatality ratio of 1.7 per cent.

Comoros, Ethiopia, Congo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe account for 85.7 per cent (89,208) of the total cases and 91.2 per cent (1,580) of total deaths reported till June 30, 2024,” the report quoted the afro’s monthly bulletin released in July 2024.

Unsafe water and poor sanitation

2021 figures in the report show that Africa accounted for nearly half (44%) of the global deaths attributed to unsafe water and poor sanitation, totaling 533,276.79 deaths out of 1,215,365.13.

Nigeria accounted for 28.04% representing 149,811 deaths, Ethiopia 8.28% (44,212 deaths), Chad 5.49% (29,262 deaths), and Ghana 1.55% (8,271 deaths). Sao Tome and Principe, Libya, and Tunisia recorded the lowest figures of 0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.03%, respectively.

The report highlights that the decline in groundwater quality is an emerging challenge that exacerbates the disease burden. It notes that, although much of the economy in Sub-Saharan Africa relies on groundwater, insufficient attention is given to its quality.

“Due to geological formations several African countries have higher concentrations of fluorides, arsenic and chlorides. These also make groundwater unfit for drinking without treatment.”

A 2020 study by CSE found high concentrations of iron, magnesium, and chlorides in Uganda’s groundwater, attributed to natural mineralization. Fluoride levels also exceeded WHO drinking water guidelines due to volcanic deposits. These conditions, CSE says, can lead to various health issues, such as fluorosis, while high iron levels contribute to unpleasant odors and tastes, and manganese can damage plumbing fixtures and laundry.

In Tanzania, the CSE study identified that groundwater is contaminated with nitrates and sulfates. The mining of these resources, along with the hazardous dumping of waste, leads to pollution in water bodies, increasing their salt and mineral content and affecting their pH levels (acidity or basicity).

“The community should either have community-level water supply systems which treat the groundwater before supply to households or there should be mechanisms where the groundwater supplies are treated before supply to households, which again can be a costly affair for the rural households,” CSE recommended.

Govt’s health infrastructure projects yielding positive results – Okoe-Boye https://www.adomonline.com/govts-health-infrastructure-projects-yielding-positive-results-okoe-boye/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 20:12:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450773 The Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye says the completion of some health infrastructure projects across the country are making significant impacts on healthcare delivery.

He cited the completion of Kumawu and Fomena District Hospitals which was started by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Several hospitals that were left uncompleted have been finished under this government administration. For example, the Kumawu District Hospital, which was less than 30% complete before this government came into office, is now fully operational. The same goes for Fomena Hospital, which was about 35% complete”, Dr Okoe-Boye said.

Dr Okoe-Boye announced this during the Minister’s press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information in Accra on Wednesday, September 18.

He stated that the government had also upgraded existing hospitals, including the commissioning of phase two of the Bolgatanga Hospital at $20 million.

“Before, patients had to be transported to another hospital for essential diagnostic tests like CT scans. Bolga now has its own fully functioning CT scan, which is a significant step forward in healthcare delivery,” Dr Okoe-Boye added.

The Minister stated that the construction of ultra-modern facilities like the Urology and Nephrology centres at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital promised to transform specialised healthcare in the country.

“For instance, the new Urology centre would have two theatres working 24/7 and is equipped with 71 beds. This facility alone will significantly reduce waiting times for procedures and improve patient outcomes,” he added.

The government has also integrated innovative technologies like drone deliveries to improve access to medical supplies in remote areas.

“We are using drones to deliver life-saving medicines to rural areas where transportation is a challenge. This initiative has proven essential, particularly in emergency situations,” the Minister added.

The Minister listed several ongoing projects, which included the completion of the Koforidua – Eastern Regional Hospital and the 250-bed Sewua Treatment Center in the Ashanti Region which is poised to further enhance healthcare delivery in Ghana.

“These investments not only improve health outcomes but also create jobs, demonstrating the government’s commitment to both healthcare and economic development,” he said.

He explained that, the country’s healthcare landscape was rapidly evolving, with the government determined to ensure every Ghanaian has access to quality medical care.

“We are working tirelessly to operationalise more facilities and bring healthcare closer to the people,” the Minister emphasised.

In an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse, he stated that certain mining sites are located near residential communities where people live.

He noted that the situation is dire that “from your house even if you through water, it goes straight into the mining pit.”

“All the river bodies now are destroyed … the resettlement of people affected by the mining activities of Newmont where they built roads and all – all those areas have been destroyed by illegal miners because the gold is everywhere,” he lamented on Wednesday, September 18.

According to him, they are helpless in the situation and called on the government to act to end the menace.

He noted that, if the government delays heeding their call, “from the tiniest toddler to the oldest granny would go on the field to get them [all miners] out.

“If the same government who sat down for these things to be destroyed is telling us today after eight years to come back again, I will not sit down to wait. I am not going to sit down for them to destroy it. It would go against me that during my reign, I sat down supinely for my environment to be destroyed” Nana Abankro V added.

Commenting on the deployment of security to curb the situation, he cast doubt whether it would produce a good outcome.

NDC’s demo was bogus; it was just to test popularity – Former MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-demo-was-bogus-it-was-just-to-test-popularity-former-mp-audio/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 19:48:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450755 Former Manhyia North Member of Parliament(MP), Collins Amankwa has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its demonstration against the Electoral Commission(EC).

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) member has described the demonstration as bogus and unwarranted.

In his view, it was just a means for the NDC to test its popularity in the country ahead of the December 7 election.

“From where I sit, the NDC’s enough is enough was extremely bogus. They were trying to test their popularity because it was NDC delegates and fun clubs that came out for the march.

“The NDC was expecting non-partisan Ghanaians to join them but they didn’t get those numbers,” he stated.

The NDC on Tuesday held a nationwide protest, insisting on an audit of the provisional voter’s register for the 2024 election despite the EC’s decline.

The exercise was on the back of widespread allegation of irregularities that could jeopardise the fairness of the election.

However, Mr Amankwa on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, stressed that, it was unnecessary, especially when the NDC has failed to comply with the EC’s request for evidence.

“It seems the NDC has been overtaken by events because when they first raised these issues, the EC assured it will be corrected through the exhibition exercise.

Now, the EC is asking for evidence to help resolve outstanding issues but you have refused. Ghana is not a banana republic and it will not collapse because the demands of some people are not being met,” he cautioned.

‘One-Village, One Dam’ should have been ‘One-Village, One-Fishpond’ – CPP Chair https://www.adomonline.com/one-village-one-dam-should-have-been-one-village-one-fishpond-cpp-chair/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 19:42:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450749 The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the opposition Convention People’s Party (CPP), Opare Addo has said the government should have considered embarking on a “One-Village, One Fishpond” initiative instead of the “One-Village, One-Dam.”

His position is that, that initiative would have been more beneficial than the dams.

He explained that, fishponds would have boosted Ghana’s fishery resources and reduce dependence on the marine ecosystem for fish products.

According to him, if fishponds had been established, local communities could have managed them effectively, unlike the current dams, many of which have dried up and provided little benefit.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) “One-Village, One-Dam” initiative is aimed at ensuring a year-round water availability for farming and livestock rearing for smallholder farmers.

It is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Northern Development Authority, and the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority.

Speaking at a “Political Parties Dialogue on the Fisheries Sector,” organised by the Centre for Coastal Management at the University of Cape Coast on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, Mr. Opare Addo expressed concern over the destruction of inland water sources due to illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

He lamented that many inland fishers have lost their livelihoods as water bodies have become polluted by galamsey, turning them brown and unusable.

The Dialogue

The event provided a platform for political parties to present their policies for the fisheries sector, drawing together experts, fishers, political figures, and civil society organisations.

Mr Addo suggested that aquaculture offers a better alternative to marine fishing, as fish farming can even be done in backyards with proper education.

Drawing on his own experience in fish farming, he described it as an accessible and viable option.

He condemned the destruction of water bodies, calling it an “intentional affliction” caused by citizens, which demands urgent action.

Mr. Addo believes that by protecting freshwater sources, Ghana could secure its future.
He also emphasised that Ghana’s development lies in the hands of its people, rather than external institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He said should the CPP be elected into power, the party would focus on developing the fisheries sector by building the capacities of those who depend directly on marine resources, ensuring sustainable growth and development.

University administrators resume strike https://www.adomonline.com/university-administrators-resume-strike/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 19:36:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450748 The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has resumed its indefinite industrial action and withdraw its services in all 15 public universities over unpaid outstanding allowances despite previous agreement.

The Association in a release issued and signed by its National President, Michael Owusu Ansah and General Secretary, Austin Amissare today (September 18, 2024) following an emergency Executive Council Meeting stated that, it would continue the industrial until all outstanding payments are made and issues resolved.

“GAUA at its Emergency National Executive Committee Meeting resolved to reactivate its previously suspended industrial action with the withdrawal of administrative and professional services with effect from September 18, 2024 until all outstanding payments are made, and issues are completely resolved,” it stated.

Concerns

GAUA in its release argued that the strike stemmed from the delay in implementation of negotiated conditions of service provisions, although “an agreement has been reached with the government since July 2024, a letter of approval for the full implementation of the negotiated conditions of service is yet to be issued by the Ministry of Finance”. Adding that, all attempts to get the government and its relevant agencies to get this done have not yielded the desired results.

It also noted that despite reaching an agreement in principle with the government for the payment of Non-Payment of Online Teaching Support Allowances (OTSA) to eligible staff, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has continued to impede its way, thereby making it impossible for the parties to conclude negotiations for payment.

GAUA added as part of its reason, the non-adherence to memorandum of agreement signed with Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) with June 30 this year as the deadline remains unattended to, despite several reminders sent to GTEC.

The Association, therefore, called for an immediate conclusion of negotiations for the payment of the OTSA and demands that outstanding issues in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed with GTEC be addressed forthwith.

Background and Impact

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) embarked on a strike action in January 2024 over conditions of service concerns.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed with the government, represented by the GTEC, and witnessed by the Minister of Education, resulting in GAUA suspending its strike action which has now been reactivated.

It argued that government and its agencies have reneged on their promises; and despite GAUA’s several attempts to remind them to keep to the letter and spirit of the MOA signed, none of these have been heeded.

The withdrawal of services by GAUA would mean a delay in the admission and commencement of academic works in at all 15 public universities across the country, as essential services such providing counsel to students on their student and academic life within university guidelines, managing schedules, meetings, and calendars across departments to ensure operational efficiency, coordinating admission in various faculties will be absent.

The industrial action could impede resumption of academic work in the public universities across the country who are expected to resume later this month and early next month to commence new semesters.

The disqualification was however overturned by the Appeals Board after a petition, paving way for him to contest.
The Guru-led administration will steer the affairs of the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.

Kow Essuman: Bawumia’s vision for the youth, jobs, and modern economy https://www.adomonline.com/kow-essuman-bawumias-vision-for-the-youth-jobs-and-modern-economy/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 19:06:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450737 One thing is becoming clear: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is not just talking about business—he means business.

In the manifesto unveiled by the NPP, Dr. Bawumia outlines a bold vision to transform Ghana’s economy, with a laser focus on creating jobs for young people and developing businesses that can thrive in a new, modern global economy.

For young Ghanaians, this is more than a manifesto—it’s a roadmap to economic empowerment. As host of the weekly Patriotic Spaces on X, which engages directly with young people, I had the privilege of sitting down with the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Mr. Yaw Afriyie, on 4th September 2024, to break down what this really means for the future of our nation’s youth.

And the message is clear: a vote for Dr. Bawumia is a vote for businesses, innovation, and job creation. In the conversation, we talked about Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to jobs and digital skills, the SME bank, a digital economy for a global future, his vision for sustainability and long-term job creation, and creating opportunities for all through deliberate policies on gender and inclusivity.

Commitment to jobs and digital skills

In today’s rapidly evolving world, where the Fourth Industrial Revolution is disrupting industries across the globe, it is no longer enough to depend on traditional jobs. The NPP manifesto understands this shift and prioritises preparing Ghanaian youth for the digital age.

With a commitment to training 1,000,000 young people in digital skills, the message Dr. Bawumia is sounding is loud and clear: Ghana is ready to position its youth at the forefront of the global digital economy.

This is a game-changer. Young people from all walks of life, whether in rural or urban areas, will have access to skills in fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics. These industries will define the future of work, and Ghana’s youth will be equipped not just to participate but to lead in these spaces.

The creation of jobs is not limited to traditional sectors. The manifesto highlights the potential of sectors like agribusiness, construction, tourism, and creative arts, where young people can carve out meaningful careers. Dr. Bawumia’s vision is one where young Ghanaians are not just employees; they are entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders in a future-focused economy.

SME Bank: Empowering entrepreneurs

Access to financing has always been a major barrier for young entrepreneurs. This is where Dr. Bawumia’s proposal of an SME Bank comes into play.

This initiative is designed to provide tailored financial support for small and medium-sized businesses, which employ over 80% of Ghanaians. It is aimed at young business owners needing capital to scale their ideas.

But financing is only part of the story. Initiatives like the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) introduced under the government of Nana Akufo-Addo, which has already funded 15,000 small businesses, demonstrate a commitment to supporting youth-led enterprises through mentorship and training.

For young people looking to start or grow their businesses, these programmes provide not just the resources but also the networks and support systems they need to succeed.

Digital Economy for a global future

Dr. Bawumia is not just thinking about today’s economy—he is looking towards the future. The manifesto outlines a clear plan to transform Ghana into a world-class digital economy.

This includes building a National Robotics, Engineering, and AI Lab, establishing a $100 million Fintech Fund to support tech startups, and pushing for cross-border mobile money interoperability across Africa.

For young tech enthusiasts, this is an exciting time. The world is moving towards digital solutions in finance, health, education, and nearly every other sector.

Ghana is being positioned as the digital hub of Africa, and this opens up a wealth of opportunities for young Ghanaians to create innovative solutions, access new markets, and build successful tech enterprises.

Vision for sustainability and long-term job creation

In addition to digital industries, Dr. Bawumia is investing in sustainable job creation in sectors like green energy, mining, and agriculture. The manifesto emphasises the development of the electric vehicle industry and solar power, creating jobs not only for the present but also for the long-term future.

This is an important distinction. Many job creation initiatives focus on short-term gains, but Dr. Bawumia’s policies are designed to create industries that will provide sustainable careers for generations of Ghanaians.

By concentrating on renewable energy and sustainable agriculture, young people will find opportunities in industries that are growing, stable, and aligned with the global push towards green economies.

Gender and Inclusivity: Opportunities for all

One of the standout features of the NPP’s manifesto is its focus on inclusivity, particularly for young women. Initiatives like the Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund (WoTEF), gender parity in scholarship awards, and the commitment to making tertiary education free for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) reflect a commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

These policies open new doors for young women entrepreneurs and professionals. The manifesto promises to address the specific challenges women face in business and the workplace, including support for women-owned businesses and measures to protect women’s rights in the workforce. This holistic approach to job creation and economic empowerment recognises the need to create opportunities for all, regardless of gender or ability.

A Vote for Bawumia is a vote for the future

At its core, Dr. Bawumia’s message is one of possibility. In his own words, “It is possible” to build a future where every young Ghanaian has the chance to thrive in a dynamic and modern economy.

The policies outlined in the manifesto are not just promises—they are bold solutions designed to create businesses, foster entrepreneurship, and provide secure jobs in a future-focused economy.

For young people across Ghana, this election presents a critical choice. A vote for Dr. Bawumia is a vote for businesses, jobs, and innovation.

It is a vote for policies that will equip the youth with the skills they need to succeed in a global digital economy, empower entrepreneurs with the resources they need to grow, and build sustainable industries that will provide long-term employment.

Dr. Bawumia means business, and his business is the future of Ghana’s youth. The opportunities are vast, and the vision is clear: a brighter, prosperous future where young people lead the way.

So as we head to the polls in December, remember—a vote for Dr. Bawumia is a vote for businesses and jobs, for a Ghana that thrives in a modern, global economy. Let’s build a future of possibility together. It is possible!

Galamsey crisis: Organised Labour makes additional demands https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-crisis-organised-labour-makes-additional-demands/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:59:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450735 Organised Labour has reiterated plans to embark on a nationwide strike by the end of September if decisive measures are not taken to address the illegal mining crisis locally known as galamsey.

The Union had earlier demanded for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in all areas affected by illegal mining.

However, following a meeting on September 17, 2024, with the ad-hoc inter-ministerial Committee set up by the President to engage stakeholders, additional demands have been made.

In a statement signed by the Secretary General, Joshua Ansah noted that given the dire nature of the threat we face, the union is also demanding the revocation of Forest (Cessation of Forest Reserve) (Amendment) Instrument, 2023 (Ε.Ι. 234) and all political parties to sign a pact on banning galamsey.

“While the Government team accepted these proposals from Organised Labour, it requested additional time to engage other stakeholders to enable it to develop a comprehensive roadmap towards addressing the galamsey menace.

“This would also enable the Government to respond to the specific demands of Organised Labour in a week,” the statement read.

The statement noted that the union remains resolute and their initial demands remain unchanged and timelines for action have not been varied.

Organised Labour has warned that if a favourable response is not received by the end of September 2024, Organised Labour’s intended actions would be rolled out.

“We continue to count on the support of our members and well-meaning Ghanaians and urge all to remain resolute in our quest to ensure our self-preservation and a complete cessation of galamsey in our country,” it added.

Corruption scandals no longer attract media attention – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/corruption-scandals-no-longer-attract-media-attention-mahama/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:33:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450709 Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed worry about what he says is the normalisation of corruption scandals under the government.

In his view, such issues have become so common that they no longer get media attention.

The former President cited the current sorry state of the pitches of Ghana’s stadia, which are supposed to have undergone costly rehabilitation in recent times but have attracted a ban by the Confederation of African Football due to their horrible nature as an example.

Mr Mahama was speaking during his interaction with traditional authorities at the start of his tour of the Ahafo Region.

According to Mr. Mahama, the ban imposed on Ghana is unprecedented and will require that Ghana will have to play its international matches in a foreign country.

He wondered how such huge sums were doled out to contractors to renovate the facilities yet the nation ends up with a ban, insisting that everyone is tired of the corruption scandals.

He said barely a week passes without news of some corruption scandal.

Mr Mahama accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of creating new regions without providing the necessary infrastructure and said the six new regions have lagged in development projects.

He pledged that if elected as president in the upcoming December 7 general elections, his administration would prioritise infrastructural development in all newly established regions.

“We need new regional hospitals in the six new regions to ensure that health facilities are equipped with the necessary tools for proper medical care, so people don’t have to travel to Kumasi for treatment.

“Ahafo will get its own regional hospital, and the same applies to Bono East. This will ease pressure on other hospitals,” he said.

Mr Mahama further noted, “Since the creation of the new regions, there has been no significant infrastructural development. Goaso, for example, remains the same. The NDC prioritises development, and we promised in 2020 that, if elected, we would provide these six new regions with infrastructure that reflects their status.”

Ketu South unites in land reclamation effort to protect future generations https://www.adomonline.com/ketu-south-unites-in-land-reclamation-effort-to-protect-future-generations/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:30:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450716 In a display of environmental responsibility and community collaboration, the Sand Winners and Tipper Truck Association in Ketu South, DANELO Enterprise, H2KA Enterprise, Parlous K Company Ltd, Pure Sam Enterprise, and TeshHa Company Ltd. have launched a two-week land reclamation project, a bold step towards restoring ecological balance in the municipality.

This initiative, which seeks to rehabilitate land previously degraded by sand extraction, underscores the importance of sustainable land management, offering new hope for the region’s agricultural and ecological future.

The once-barren and scarred landscape is set to be transformed into fertile ground for tree planting and food crop cultivation, a vital resource for the local communities who rely on these lands for their livelihoods.

The project has ignited a sense of collective responsibility, not just among industry players, but also among residents who see the reclamation effort as an investment in their future.

Managing Director of H2KA Company and a key advocate for the initiative, Mr Hounkporti, highlighted the profound significance of land restoration.

“Returning the land to its natural state is not just about environmental sustainability, but about ensuring that future generations have access to land that can sustain life and growth,” he said.

According to Mr Hounkporti, the reclamation process is a critical step toward renewing the land’s potential, whether for agriculture, tree planting, or other community-centred activities.

He called on sand winners across the country to adopt similar practices, emphasising that the sustainable use of land is essential for long-term environmental and economic health.

The human element of this reclamation project is deeply woven into the fabric of the local community.

Many families have lived for years with the impact of uncontrolled sand extraction, which has led to environmental degradation, making it difficult to grow crops or even secure clean water.

The Association’s efforts offer a ray of hope, signalling a commitment to restoring the environment and creating a foundation for better living conditions.

Chairman of the Sand Winners and Tipper Truck Association in Ketu South, Mr Epiphany Klutse, echoed these sentiments, noting that land reclamation has become a central part of their mission.

“As custodians of these lands, it is our responsibility to preserve them for future generations,” he said.

Mr Klutse acknowledged that historically, sand winning in Ketu South had been largely unregulated, resulting in abandoned and dangerous sand pits.

However, under his leadership, the association has taken a proactive approach to address this, working closely with local authorities to regulate the industry and ensure that every sand extraction site is properly reclaimed.

“Neglecting reclamation after sand winning harms the environment and leaves communities vulnerable. We will enforce the law and hold accountable those who fail to meet these obligations,” Mr Klutse warned, stressing the association’s determination to protect the land and its people.

The initiative has sparked widespread support among residents, many of whom have long felt the impact of unregulated sand winning on their land and livelihoods.

Speaking with palpable relief, community members expressed gratitude for the project, seeing it as a turning point in the fight for sustainable land use in Ketu South.

“I’ve lived here all my life and watched the land deteriorate over the years. Now, seeing this change gives me hope that my grandchildren will have better opportunities than we did,” said one elderly resident.

The ongoing reclamation project is not just a technical exercise; it is a symbol of hope and renewal for the community. It stands as a testament to the power of collective action, with local leaders, industry players, and residents working together to secure a better future for Ketu South.

The success of this project could serve as a blueprint for other regions grappling with the environmental impacts of sand winning, showcasing the power of collaboration and responsible stewardship of natural resources.

As the land begins to heal, the social and environmental benefits of this reclamation effort are already being felt. The promise of restored farmlands and a more sustainable future has instilled a renewed sense of purpose among the people of Ketu South, marking this as a pivotal moment in the region’s path towards environmental recovery and long-term prosperity.

Nana Bosompra is worried the situation could denigrate into electoral violence if the Electoral Commission(EC) does not sit up.

According to him, it will not be in the interest of Ghanaians if the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensah continues to prove stubborn and refuses to listen to wise counsel.

The chief was speaking in a meeting with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama as part of his campaign tour.

He admonished the EC to take steps to listen and resolve the NDC’s concerns which may be legitimate to avoid chaos.

The chief cautioned the EC not to toil with the peace of the country, urging the EC to satisfy all stakeholders.

“Look at what is happening at the EC. She is proving stubborn and doesn’t want to listen to anyone because even at the start of the voter registration, I suggested that the process should be decentralised but she did not listen and now we are facing another challenge,” he fumed.

Responding to the issues by the chiefs, John Mahama reiterated the NDC’s commitment to ensure peaceful elections; but, justice must be served.

CSOs in mining embark on ‘reinvest royalties’ in local communities campaign https://www.adomonline.com/csos-in-mining-embark-on-reinvest-royalties-in-local-communities-campaign/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:26:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450708 The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in mining have initiated a campaign calling on the government to reinvest tax revenue from small-scale mining into the communities affected by mining operations.

Dubbed the ‘Reinvest Royalties’ campaign which is gaining traction, it seeks to advocate for these funds to be used for vital infrastructure projects such as schools, hospitals, and environmental protection in mining regions.

The proponents have argued that by redirecting a portion of the royalties back to mining communities, the government can increase legal mining, build local wealth and reduce dependency on “galamsey.”

The Reinvest Royalties campaign is working alongside community leaders in Bole and Amansie West, with support from local radio programming and social media initiatives to spread the message.

According to the campaign team, the content on social media has received millions of engagements, with many messages supporting the idea of royalties.

The campaign is further backed by the UK Ghana programme in collaboration and a number of civil society organisations, including Natural Resource Governance Institute, KASA, CEDA, Institute For Energy Security, Arocha Ghana and SYND which have united under the banner of the Shared Prosperity Initiative.

Together, they are advocating for a shift in the approach to mining regulation, emphasising the need to work with mining communities to end illegal mining, rather than relying solely on enforcement.

The Technical Advisor for UKGGP, Dr. Steve Manteaw, has said the campaign’s central message is clear.

“If we want to end galamsey, we must empower our mining communities. By giving communities a stake in the royalties generated from mining, they will have a vested interest in welcoming regulated mining operations while rejecting illegal ones,” he stated.

Dr Manteaw added that, investing in these communities will not only boost local economies but also strengthen local development opportunities.

In addition to improving infrastructure, the campaign highlights that mining royalties can be channelled towards safeguarding the environment.

These funds could cover the costs of geological surveys, ensuring more precise and less destructive mining practices.

They could also support the development of less harmful extraction methods and fund the reclamation of sites once mines have closed.

Billions Lost Due to Illegal Mining

Ghana is losing billions of dollars each year due to illegal mining and gold smuggling. The Reinvest Royalties campaign believes that better regulation can keep this money within the country and support Ghanaian citizens.

However, the campaign stresses that forced regulation is not the solution; instead, the government must create an environment where mining communities actively seek regulation by ensuring they benefit from it.

Better Regulation, More Royalties, Stronger Communities

The campaign insists that better mining regulation will result in more revenue for Ghana, and a portion of this should be reinvested in the communities where the mining occurs.

This model, they argue, would create a positive cycle of royalties driving an increase in regulation, which in turn further increases the amount of royalties earned by communities.

By ensuring that mining communities benefit directly from the tax on regulated mining, the campaign states these communities will become less tolerant of illegal mining activities on their lands.

The CSOs have emphasised that reinvesting mining royalties in the communities where mining takes place will foster sustainable development, strengthen local economies, and help put an end to illegal mining once and for all.

TEWU threatens indefinite industrial action https://www.adomonline.com/tewu-threatens-indefinite-industrial-action/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:22:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450685 The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC)-Ghana has threatened to embark on an indefinite industrial action by September 20.

In a statement, TEWU said it will be joining the Senior Staff AssociationUniversities of Ghana (SSA-UOG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).

The action according to TEWU is in protest of unresolved issues regarding their conditions of service.

TEWU among others cited the Controller and Accountant General’s Department’s (CAGD) non-implementation of the negotiated and approved Vehicle Maintenance and OffCampus allowances despite an approval letter by the Ministry of Finance on 2nd August, 2024

“The unfulfilled promise by Government to recalculate and pay members Tier Two interest that has accrued from the delayed payment of the Tier Two deductions to our Scheme from January, 2010-2016

“Failure on the part of government to regularly remit our Tier Two deductions to our Scheme for our Fund Managers to effectively manage and guarantee enhanced pensions. Currently, the government is owing our Tier Two deductions from January, 2024 to date (8 months) even though, such deductions were made from our hardearned salaries,” the statement noted.

Christian Council calls for fairness, transparency ahead of 2024 elections https://www.adomonline.com/christian-council-calls-for-fairness-transparency-ahead-of-2024-elections/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:22:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450663 The Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of the Christian Council of Ghana is advocating for fairness and transparency before, during and after the 2024 election.

In this regard, the Council has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to enhance its methods and address issues raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), concerning the voter’s register.

In a statement, the Eminent group noted that, the NDC’s concerns if not resolved could impact the trust Ghanaians have in the EC.

“Nevertheless, the 2024 polls are being conducted under intensified skepticism, particularly due to concerns raised by the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the 2024 voter’s register and related issues,” the statement read in parts.

“We therefore call on the Electoral Commissioner to elevate her consultations and participatory methods and ensure increased transparency and improved communication with stakeholders to cultivate confidence and trust. This is especially crucial in this election year,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the group has appealed to the NDC to ensure peace while exercising their rights and to avoid inciting their followers to act in ways that could disrupt the peace of the nation.

The EPG’s message follows the NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration to intensify theIr  demands for a forensic audit of the voter’s register over alleged discrepancies.

NDC demo: EC is being firm; doing its work as mandated by law – Justin Kodua https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-demo-ec-is-being-firm-doing-its-work-as-mandated-by-law-justin-kodua/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:19:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450683 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has defended the Electoral Commission (EC) against calls from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for an independent audit of the voter register ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections.

On Tuesday, September 17, the NDC held a nationwide protest demanding an audit, alleging irregularities in the provisional voter’s register that could undermine the election’s fairness. The EC has disagreed with these allegations.

However, speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday, Mr Kodua criticized the NDC’s stance, emphasizing the EC’s autonomy and adherence to its legal mandate.

“The EC is being firm and doing its work as mandated by the law. Since 1992, no independent body has been asked to audit the EC’s voter register,” he stated.

Justin Kodua questioned the necessity of involving a third party, asserting that the EC’s established processes for registration, transfer, and exhibition are designed to address any challenges and correct anomalies.

“The EC is simply carrying out its responsibilities. What is the purpose of the EC if we are calling for a third party to perform its duties? The processes that the EC has implemented for registration, transfer, and exhibition serve their purpose.

“The essence of the exhibition is to address any challenges and correct any anomalies. In 2015, we raised concerns with the EC supported by evidence, but the NDC disagreed with us. So, why is the NDC changing their stance now?” he asked.

The NPP General Secretary further urged the NDC to focus on their campaign rather than challenging the EC’s processes, stating that elections are a serious matter and should not be subject to unnecessary disruptions.

Climate change exposed 2 billion to more than 30 days of health-threatening temperatures https://www.adomonline.com/climate-change-exposed-2-billion-to-more-than-30-days-of-health-threatening-temperatures/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:00:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450699 Climate Central is set to release a new report, revealing that one in four people on the planet experienced climate change-driven temperatures every day in June, July, and August because of the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, and coal, and human activities.

Between June and August, 2 billion people were exposed to more than 30 days of health-threatening temperatures strongly influenced by climate change.

Human-induced heat worsened drought conditions all over the world, including in Russia, China, Italy and Ghana, leading to crop failures, prompting governments to declare emergency measures, and resulting in export bans.

72 countries experienced their hottest summer since at least 1970, significantly driven by climate change. 180 cities in the Northern Hemisphere experienced at least one extreme heatwave from June to August. These heatwaves are, on average, 21 times more likely today because of carbon pollution, mainly caused by burning coal, oil and gas.

“High temperatures that were clearly influenced by climate change jeopardized the health of billions around the world during the past three months,” said Andrew Pershing, vice president for science at Climate Central. “No region, country, or city is safe from the deadly threats posed by burning fossil fuels.”

Using Climate Central’s Climate Shift Index, this new analysis quantifies the impact of climate change on temperatures and estimates the number of people affected by these extreme conditions. It provides detailed data on heat exposure at global, regional, local levels, and in about 1,200 cities.

To estimate the risks of heat to human health, researchers looked at days in which temperatures were significantly hotter than the historical record — the “risky heat” days. Temperatures on these days are hotter than 90% of temperatures observed in a local area over the 1991-2020 period — this represents a minimum mortality threshold at which heat-related health risks climb statistically.

Key Findings:

Over 2 billion people (25% of the global population) experienced 30 or more days of risky heat that were made at least three times more likely by climate change.

More than 4 billion people faced unusual temperatures made at least three times more likely by climate change on August 13, the peak of the global heat.

During this record-breaking season, when 72 countries broke their heat record for the June-August period, few urban areas escaped the impacts of carbon pollution, mainly caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

The average person experienced 17 extra days of “risky heat” around the world because of climate change, representing a potential risk to global health.

Climate Central is a non-advocacy, non-profit science and news organization providing authoritative information to help the public and policymakers make sound decisions about climate and energy.

2024 polls: Northern Ghana will be the key battleground – Political Analyst https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-northern-ghana-will-be-the-key-battleground-political-analyst/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 17:57:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450651 A political analyst, Dr Kwasi Amakye-Boateng has stated that the five northern regions will be key in determining the winner of the 2024 election.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has made significant strides in these regions.

A recent study projects that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will lead in 11 regions in the December 7 polls.

Research by SBM Intelligence indicates that the NPP’s vote share in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region, may experience a slight decline. Additionally, the NPP is expected to face strong competition from the NDC in the Northern, Western North, and Oti regions.

Speaking on JoyNews, Dr Amakye-Boateng said, “The NDC has definitely had its own way there [Northern Region], and this time around they also have one of their own who is prominent. Yes, it is going to be a key battleground, there is no doubt about that.”

Dr Amakye-Boateng said that the Greater Accra and Central Regions stand out as swing regions that both parties will focus on, while the Eastern Region is expected to support the NPP.

He noted that Greater Accra is not as predictable, and if it votes for the NDC, it could significantly enhance their chances.

“The same thing goes with Central Region, and Central Region is an interesting place, very difficult to predict how they are voting once again. Once again, if Central Region stays with NDC, obviously it would boost their chances.”

According to him, some companies which are in existence are underperforming, citing the Produce Buying Company (PBC) as an example.

“All the jobs they inherited have collapsed. PBC had been in existence from Nkrumah’s time and under my tenure, 30% of cocoa exported were purchased by PBC but now they don’t have the capacity and is in distress.

“Banks they borrowed monies from have started selling their assets. So this shows the Akufo-Addo government could not even take care of the cocoa industry,” he said.

Speaking to the members of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer said he is contesting the 2024 election to rescue Ghana from the mess created by the incumbent government.

This was as part of his campaign tour in the region to spread the rescue and reset Ghana messages to electorates.

Before holding the usual rallies, Mr Mahama met the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, where he outlined his vision and also reminded them of the destruction caused by the ruling NPP regime.

“Ghana discovered oil under former President Kufuor’s era but it oil and gas became operational under Atta-Mills we established jubilee field.

“We went for a loan from China and established Atuabo gas to power electricity under my tenure. Sankofa and ten fields were also created to increase oil production by 100,000 barrels but in eight years, not a single barrel has been added, reducing it by 35% the only thing we have now is gold,” he bemoaned.

Bawumia outlines plan to fight Galamsey, pushes for use of Ghana Card https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-outlines-plan-to-fight-galamsey-pushes-for-use-of-ghana-card/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 17:27:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450677 Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed a comprehensive plan to combat illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, with a focus on regulation and the inclusion of the Ghana Card in monitoring activities.

Speaking during a campaign visit to the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a more preventive approach to tackle the galamsey menace, stating that enforcement alone would not solve the problem.

He called for a reformation of the small-scale mining sector, which includes a geological mapping system to identify gold reserves and direct miners to legal and environmentally sustainable mining sites.

“We are always chasing people, but we are not preventing illegal mining from happening in the first place,” the Vice President said. “We need to sanitize the regime, regularize it, and ensure that the Geological Survey Authority maps out where all the gold reserves are.”

A critical part of Dr. Bawumia’s strategy is the registration of miners, using the Ghana Card to monitor and regulate their activities.

He explained that this would bring miners into the formal sector, allowing authorities to supervise their work and ensure they adhere to environmentally friendly practices, such as using machines that avoid mercury and keep mining away from water bodies.

“Once miners are registered with their Ghana Cards and directed to specific areas where they can mine legally, it will reduce the destruction of our environment,” he added. “This way, we can track their activities and prevent them from hiding and causing harm.”

Dr. Bawumia stressed that formalizing small-scale mining and enforcing the laws would go a long way in resolving the galamsey problem.

“If we don’t regulate them, they will hide and operate unlawfully. But with proper registration and supervision, we can win this fight,” he noted.

This revelation comes in the wake of Diddy’s arrest on September 17.

Since Diddy’s arrest, the buzz around his legal troubles has been unrelenting. A 14-page indictment, which was unsealed recently, has charged Diddy with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

The indictment has dominated headlines, prompting 50 Cent to weigh in with a characteristic jab on Instagram.

In a playful post, 50 Cent shared a photo of himself with actress and TV host Drew Barrymore, captioning it, “Here I am keeping good company with @DrewBarrymoreTV and I don’t have 1,000 bottles of lube at the house.”

A post shared by 50 Cent (@50cent)

The indictment details the shocking discovery of over 1,000 bottles of lubricant and baby oil, which were seized during the raids of Diddy’s properties in Miami and Los Angeles.

The indictment also alleges that Diddy hosted drug-fuelled sex parties, known as “Freak Offs,” where he supposedly provided narcotics and arranged for women to be flown in for sexual activities.

Authorities also confiscated video footage from these parties, as well as three AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers.

Diddy, who was officially indicted by the U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, appeared in court on September 17.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges. Despite offering a $50 million bail package, he was denied pretrial release.

NDC alleges illegal voter transfers in Tolon, insists on forensic audit https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-alleges-illegal-voter-transfers-in-tolon-insists-on-forensic-audit/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 16:15:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450657 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) claims to have uncovered new evidence of illegal voter transfers in the national voters register.

According to Deputy Director of Election and IT of the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, aside from the illegal transfer in the Pusiga constituency, the party has uncovered additional illegal transfer of voters in the Tolon constituency in the Northern region.

As such, he said, the Electoral Commission (EC) cannot be trusted to conduct free and fair elections until a forensic audit is carried out.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on September 18, he said, “What we have seen in this current administration, led by Madam Jean Mensa, is unprecedented.

“For the first time, voters have not appeared before Returning Officers; transfers are being made by individuals sitting at the EC’s office, using Voter IDs and pictures to manipulate the system, which is against the law. This accounts for the 15,000 voters in question.

“Their names are still in the register, but they are unaware that they have been transferred from Accra to places like Bolga and Wa.”

“So we realised that the EC has a register different from the one they exhibited and different from the one they gave us. So it appears they are having three registers,” he said.

Meanwhile, a former NPP presidential aspirant, Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy, said he is surprised about the position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and EC on the NDC’s demand for an audit of the register.

According to him, the NPP should have joined the protest, as an audit of the register will inure to the benefit of all parties.

“The question is why there is the need for a demonstration before those demands are met? They should be entrenched in our Constitution. The Electoral Commission cannot audit its own work.

“For one, it is moving to a position where its own integrity and impartiality is coming into question. An independent set of eyes will lend credibility to the process and I am baffled as to why the NPP who championed this cause is now lost and doesn’t see the wisdom.”

“NPP should have joined the demonstration. I don’t know why anybody will be against improving transparency in the elections,” he said.

In a rebuttal, the Director of Election and Research of the NPP, Evans Nimako, said the party will not be drawn into the unreasonable demands.

He explained that they would rather focus on campaign activities and ensure that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wins the elections to become the next president.

“The exhibitions are intended to correct errors, such as misspellings or deletions. That is exactly what the EC must do. And that’s exactly what the EC did. Corrections are to be made to the data and then the final certified register will be made available to political parties.”

“If you’ve gone through it and realised that there is a certain 243,000 who have been transferred, captured from 2020 to 2024, you point it out to the EC. You’re saying that 15,000 people have been legally transferred. You point it out.”

“You are not prepared to submit the list to EC, but you are prepared to give it to a committee chaired by either Doctor Kennedy or IMANI. We the NPP have 79 days to December 7, we will not be distracted by this call now. It will serve no purpose,” he said.

2024 election: Latest survey predicts NDC win in 11 regions, NPP’s dip in Ashanti https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-latest-survey-predicts-ndc-win-in-11-regions-npps-dip-in-ashanti/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 16:08:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450647 A recent survey by SBM Intelligence is projecting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win in 11 regions in the 2024 election.

However, the survey has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will share votes in its stronghold with the party to experience a dip in the Ashanti Region.

The report titled ‘Ghana’s 2024 elections: A preview‘ is only up-to-date as of Thursday, September 12, 2024.

NPP is projected to win around 70.5% of the votes in Ashanti, down from the 72.8% it garnered in the 2020 presidential election.

Also, the NPP according to the survey will face stiff competition from the NDC in the Northern, Western North and Oti regions.

“In the elections, the NDC is projected to secure victory in 11 regions, including all three swing regions, leaving only five regions for the NPP,” the September 2024 report showed.

More so, the NDC is expected to easily maintain three out of the five regions namely Upper East, Upper West, Savannah and battle the NPP for the Northern region.”

“In the North East, Bawumia’s candidacy is expected to help the NPP maintain its win and improve its vote share from 51.40% to 55.8%.”

The report comes with barely 80 days left for the December 7 election as political parties intensify campaigns to solicit for votes.

Meanwhile, over 20 presidential aspirants have successfully submitted their nomination forms to the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the election.

God inspired my decision to contest for Presidency – Independent candidate https://www.adomonline.com/god-inspired-my-decision-to-contest-for-presidency-independent-candidate/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 16:05:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450639 Founder of the Risen People’s Party (RPP), Apostle James Kwesi Oppong, has said his decision to run for President is not based on a personal conviction.

According to him, it is a divine calling inspired by a vision from God.

In an interview with Adom News, Apostle Oppong expressed deep concern about the current state of the nation, citing the declining standard of living, the depreciation of the cedi, and the rising unemployment rates.

It was based on these challenges that he said God revealed to him that he was the right person to lead the nation to success.

He added that, since 2019, he has been diligently preparing for this journey, navigating all necessary electoral processes, and he is now proud to have filed his nomination forms.

Apostle Oppong stated that, when sworn in as the next President of Ghana, he would prioritize improvements in the agriculture and banking sectors and create job opportunities for the youth.

Touching on education, he firmly expressed that he does not support the concept of free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

He argued that these students can contribute to their families’ incomes and help cover their fees, questioning the rationale behind the initiative.

Mr Oppong pointed out that this approach, along with other free programmes, has led to excessive borrowing from foreign countries and a significant national debt.

He has therefore said he will cancel the free SHS policy and implement free kindergarten education for all children, ensuring a strong foundation for future learning.

He also noted that his ministers will be appointed based on the Holy Spirit’s direction since truthful people are needed to serve the country.

The aspirant added he has begun engaging people to contest as Independent Members of Parliament (MPs) to ensure the smooth and effective running of his government when elected.

Mustapha Gbande has said he will not mind if it will take his blood for the NDC to be sworn in as the next government in January 2025.

Mr Gbande made the declaration on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, programme Wednesday stating the NDC is actively campaigning to win the election.

“If it’ll take my blood to ensure NPP is not in power in 2025; we will do so. We are actively working to achieve that because the NPP is not on the ground.

“Apart from following Napo and Bawumia around, they are not doing anything. Let any NPP executive show me evidence that they are working,” he stated.

He was confident the efforts of the NDC outweigh the New Patriotic Party(NPP) which gives them an upper hand in the December 7 polls.

Mustapha further cited that concerns raised by NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua that some government appointees have lost touch with their base is evident.

“The NPP General Secretary confirmed it so the party is hanging. The NDC go through the same pain as the NPP but we will not sit and watch for our appointees to disgrace the NDC in this manner.

“Some people want to work smart and others hard but I will work hard and touch base with the grassroots. But in as much has knowledge has failed the NPP, they must be guided by wisdom and not do anything that will bring problem in Ghana,” he stated.

Gov’t unveils ultra modern Minerals Commission office at Bibiani https://www.adomonline.com/govt-unveils-ultra-modern-minerals-commission-office-at-bibiani/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 15:35:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450629 As part of ongoing efforts to decentralize the Minerals Commission, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has commissioned an ultra modern office equipped with the latest technology at Bibiani to oversee the Bibiani/Anhwiaso/Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The newly-constructed office which is a further validation of the government’s commitment to decentralization of the Minerals Commission will see the commission provide effective oversight in the Western North Region and beyond.

Addressing a gathering of traditional authorities, management and staff of the Minerals Commission and residents of the district, the Minister underscored the importance of a magnificent building to the efficient regulation of mining activities in the Western North Region.

He outlined specific features of the new office that make an ideal hub for mining-related activities in the area and charged the staff of the commission in the area to live up to the set expectations of the commission.

“Despite the importance of this Office to the mining industry, it has been accommodated in a very small rented chamber and hall office space for more than thirty (30) years. This impeded the recruitment of new staff to augment the work of the office. The inadequacy of the Office became even more apparent following the internal restructuring of the Minerals Commission, which necessitated increasing services at the Regional and District Offices, such as cartography, survey, community relations, environmental protection, among others.

“Nananom, Ladies and Gentlemen, with three (3) large-scale mining operations within this Municipality at Awaso, Bibiani and Chirano, it became necessary to secure a more conducive working space for the Commission to effectively regulate mining operations in this area, and to provide the full spectrum of mining-related monitoring services, not just for small scale mining, but, also, large scale mining operations, and ensure the successful implementation of the minerals diversification policy through the promotion of economic and industrial minerals. With two Satellite Offices in Nkwawie and Juaboso, I do not doubt that this Office will live up to its mandate” he said.

Mr Jinapor used the opportunity to reiterate the government’s zero tolerance for illegal small-scale mining, noting that the government has made commitments to rid the mining space of any illegality, particularly mining activities that happen close to forest reserves and river bodies.

“I want to use this opportunity to reaffirm the Government’s unflinching commitment to the fight against this canker, which, undoubtedly, threatens our very existence. This commitment, we have demonstrated through several initiatives such as the declaration of water bodies as Red Zones for mining, the suspension of reconnaissance, prospecting, and/or exploration in Forest Reserves, except in exceptional circumstances, the introduction of Operation Halt II with the mandate to decommission equipment used in illegal mining, the ban on the manufacture, sale or dealing in changfans, the introduction of mercury-free Gold Katchas, retooling of the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, introduction of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), and the training of judges to ensure strict enforcement of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995.

“Despite these measures, some nation-wreckers, motivated by their selfish interests, continue to destroy our water bodies and Forest Reserves. We are aware that what we are dealing with is money, and the cartels involved will, always, try to find ways of outwitting us. But we will not relent in our efforts, we will continue to adopt the necessary measures to protect our water bodies, environment and Forest Reserves.

“We welcome the various concerns that have been raised by several groups of people, as well as their recommendations for dealing with this matter. The President of the Republic has constituted an Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee, under the Chairmanship of the Minister for National Security, to engage all stakeholders, and to find a common ground to fight this menace. Yesterday, the Committee met with organised labour, and in the coming days, we will engage with other groups of people to ensure that we come to grips with this matter.”

The Chairperson of the Commission, Barbara Oteng-Gyasi in her remarks noted that the state-of-the-art edifice is expected to address service delivery challenges that small-scale miners within the Bibiani-Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality face as well as facilitate the monitoring and compliance role of the Commission.

Ms Barbara alluded to a number of interventions being made by the government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to sanitise and streamline mining operations, particularly in small-scale mining which includes the Community Mining Scheme, Gold Katcha among others.

Paramount Chief of Sehwi Anhwiaso Traditional area and President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, also commended the government for its effort in addressing illegal small-scale mining in the country.

He urged traditional authorities across the country to rise and help save the country’s mining resources from the harmful activities of illegal miners.

The Bibiani Minerals Commission office has become the third modernized office unveiled within the last four months.

Works are ongoing for the construction of offices in Kumasi, Tamale and Bole with expectations rife that they will be completed by November 2024.

Galamsey: Democracy hub threatens demo; demands resignation of Lands Minister, others https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-democracy-hub-threatens-demo-demands-resignation-of-lands-minister-others/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 15:12:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450624 Democracy Hub, organisers of the “Fix the Country” demonstrations have announced plans to hit the streets in the coming days over the devastation caused by illegal mining locally known as ‘galamsey’.

The group’s convener, Naa Densuah, is calling for the resignation of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and other state officials.

According to her, those in power have ignored the damage caused by illegal miners to the country’s rivers and lands because they also benefit from the illicit activities.

She emphasised that this is not merely an environmental issue but a symptom of a broken system that prioritises profit and greed over governance and the well-being of the people.

“We are not just calling for an end to illegal mining; we are calling for the resignation of those who have allowed this crisis to fester. We demand the immediate resignation of the following officials: the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources; the heads of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); the Minerals Commission; and the Forestry Commission. These are the individuals who have failed to protect our environment.”

She urged all Ghanaians to stand against illegal mining and corruption, emphasising that the future belongs to the youth.

Mrs Densuah stressed the importance of shaping the future by holding the government accountable.

“I say to you, rise. Young people of Ghana, rise and take your place at the forefront of this movement for change. Rise and demand a government that works for you, not against you. Rise and be the voice that says: galamsey must stop, corruption must end, and the future must be ours to shape.”

2024 polls: Ejura NDC targets over 20k vote difference https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-ejura-ndc-targets-over-20k-vote-difference/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 15:00:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450599 The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Ejura Sekyeredumasi in the Ashanti Region is aiming for a remarkable historic vote difference of 20,000in the upcoming December election, citing better policies and past achievements to support this target.

The Member of Parliament, Mohammed Bawa Braimah believes the party has become more appealing to voters, who he expects will turn out in large numbers for them.

“I think in 2020, there was a vote difference of over 5,000, but this time round, we are going to give the NPP a difference of 20,000 come December,” Bawa Braimah stated.

He points to significant development projects completed by the NDC in the constituency as examples of effective and selfless leadership.

“Our people are impressed with our [past] performance and they want to vote the NDC back to power,” he said.

Mr Bawa Braimah addressed the media during the party’s campaign launch at the Lorry Park in Ejura.

He is calling on residents to support the NDC in the upcoming December election.

Various speakers from the national level, including Haruna Iddrisu, Samuel Sarpong, and Ashanti regional executives, stressed the importance of voting for the NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama to ensure better economic management for Ghanaians.

Party members and supporters at the campaign launch expressed that their voting decisions will be influenced by the current economic conditions.

Adiza Munkaila shared her concerns about the economic situation, stating that the prices of essential goods have risen, making them unaffordable for women.

“Inflation is taking away the country – women can’t go to market and we hardly go to market,” Adiza said.

She believes that Ghanaian women need the NDC to return to power and lead the country again.

Rubatu Musah agrees with Adiza about the rising prices of goods, urging Ghanaians to consider their living standards when voting for the NDC.

“Let’s try and vote for John Dramani because things haven’t been good. This is the time for John Dramani to return to rule,” she indicated.

A member of the NDC in Ejura, Abdul Razak, expresses confidence that the party will win power, asserting that change will definitely come in December.

Other residents, such as Samira Iddrisu and Yakubu Ibrahim, indicated that they want to witness change in the upcoming December election that will bring improvement to their living conditions.

I never would’ve believed I’d be in a wheelchair a decade ago – Kufuor https://www.adomonline.com/i-never-wouldve-believed-id-be-in-a-wheelchair-a-decade-ago-kufuor/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 14:48:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450611 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for a more inclusive society for persons living with disabilities.

According to him, disability can affect anyone, regardless of wealth or education.

Speaking at the inaugural Disability Conversation hosted by the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, Kufuor reflected on his experience, stating that he could never have imagined a decade ago that he would one day rely on a wheelchair.

“Look at me today,” Kufuor said. “If someone had said ten years ago that I would be in a wheelchair today, perhaps, he would have been disputed and damned as a false prophet, but this prophecy is the reality today, I’m in a wheelchair and I cannot walk, and I need about four, five six hefty men to be pushing me around like a baby.

He urged for greater acceptance and integration of people with disabilities, highlighting the importance of embracing diversity and developing tolerance for all individuals.

“We cannot afford to leave any segment of our society behind,” Kufuor added. “We must appreciate our differences and our individual challenges, and work towards integrating everyone as an integral part of the human race.”

John Kufuor also emphasised the significance of the Disability Act in fostering a society where all individuals, including those with disabilities, feel safe, valued, and protected.

Meanwhile, a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko SAID public facilities that do not meet the specifications and are inaccessible for persons with disability should not be certified.

“I struggle to understand how an engineer can approve a building or road construction that doesn’t comply with specific codes. It reflects poorly on us to cut corners. We need to recognize that disability is a universal condition, stemming from the fall of Adam. All humanity experiences disability in different forms and degrees. Embracing this mindset will help us plan better for our current or future needs.”

Individuals with disabilities who have overcome stigma and excelled in their fields shared their experiences, emphasising that they should be seen for their capabilities rather than pitied.

ECG needs a fundamental rethink – Kwabena Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/ecg-needs-a-fundamental-rethink-kwabena-donkor/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 14:38:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450608 Former Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has expressed concern over the ongoing financial difficulties faced by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to him, ECG needs a “fundamental rethink”, adding that there is a need to reconsider some investment into the ECG and privatisation as was done during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime.

Dr Donkor’s comments come in response to a recent warning from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which highlighted ECG’s near-bankruptcy.

Dr. Ismael Ackah, PURC’s Executive Secretary, detailed in a letter to the Energy Minister, how ECG’s financial troubles are affecting other key institutions, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), and the Bui Power Authority.

In response, in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday news on Wednesday, September 18, Mr Donkor believes this issue is not new, adding that ECG has been facing persistent financial challenges.

He stressed that “This situation did not just happen overnight. ECG has been bleeding for a while. Indeed, ECG can be likened to the woman with the bleeding problem in the Bible and it’s been going on for a while.”

“It is unfortunate and saddening that in August, ECG only collected 42 percent of what they were supposed to collect. This is a serious indictment of the whole ECG system. If you are collecting 42 percent of what you are supposed to collect, there is no way that an entity can survive without drastic structural reform…ECG needs a fundamental rethink,” he stated.

He called for urgent and drastic structural reforms but questioned the timing of such actions, as the country approaches an election period.

“This is not the time for the government of the day to come up with new proposals.”

He proposed that any significant restructuring should be postponed until after the elections, to allow for a more thoughtful, national discussion on how to revamp the power distribution system.
